ISATEC receives FIA certification for calculation of roll structures in race cars

Roll structures in race cars protect drivers against serious injuries, and are required in many classes by the FIA – Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile – the governing body of world motor sport. On May 13, 2011, the FIA has certified ISATEC GmbH for the calculation of such structures and entered it in the list of recognized engineering firms.

Comparisons of calculations with the acceptance tests for such structures show an extremely high level of agreement, so that in future our calculations alone will be sufficient and physical testing no longer required. Structures can now be optimized and tested using this method, and the final acceptance test is also performed as a simulation – eliminating the need for elaborate and expensive prototype testing.

The finite element models replicate the high stresses in the acceptance tests with their permanent deformation of the materials used in their entirety. The calculations also realistically reflect the contact behavior at the attachment points between the front cage sections, which can be removed for driving on public roads, and the rear cage section, which is permanently attached to the vehicle.
