Space Experiment AMS: Ladder

In the core detector of the AMS experiment, several plate-shaped measuring planes are integrated, on which the Si measuring cells are arranged. These Si wavers, which contain a measuring grid of 25 µm, are picked up by ladder-like structures. Several of these ladders together form the measuring surface of a plate. The ladder consists of a sandwich construction with a foam core coated with 200 µm of CFK.

The ladder is displayed on top of the image, while the reflecting surface of the Si waver side on the shaker is shown below. The colour distributions show calculated natural frequencies of the entire unit, which were precisely predicted.

Work was carried out by ISATEC in cooperation with the I. Institute of Physics (IA) at RWTH Aachen University.
