Dynamic testing and measuring technology: UIM safety cockpit

Tests and measurements contribute significantly to the safe, reliable use of technical components in conformity with applicable standards. ISATEC plays an instrumental role in the development and monitoring of guidelines and standards as a provider of specialized dynamic testing and measuring equipment.

Example: ISATEC has developed crash absorbers for Formula 1 racing boats within the framework of the Safety Cockpit Campaign of the UIM (Union International de Motonautique) This safety system protects drivers involved in collisions – especially side-impact (T-impact) collisions. Introduced in early 2007, the safety cockpits developed by ISATEC are now required equipment of all Formula 1 racing boats.

The absorbers transform kinetic energy generated upon collision into deformation forces in the inside elements. They envelop the cockpit from the prow to the area behind the driver’s seat and extend from the deck to beneath the cockpit windscreen. Various aerodynamic modifications are permitted with the limits imposed by the guidelines.

ISATEC clearly holds the pole position here, as we have been commissioned by the UIM to perform all required testing at a dynamic test rig at the RWTH in Aachen. And what is more, ISATEC was also involved in the development of UIM standards for test objects and tools, thus ensuring that tests are performed under the same conditions the world over.
